Mac Mini M6: first Apple chip in 2 nm arrives with higher price

The Mac mini M6 opens the Apple chip engraved in 2 nm and accelerates the local AI, but its Canadian price increases. Here are his novelties and real limits.

Mac Mini M6: first Apple chip in 2 nm arrives with higher price

The Mac mini keeps exactly the same small case, but its heart changes completely.

Apple presented on August 25, 2026 a new generation equipped with the M6 chip, its first processor manufactured using a 2 nanometre process. The company promises significant gains for current applications, games and artificial intelligence executed directly on the computer.

Technical progress is real on paper. However, it will be necessary to wait for independent testing, while the Canadian price increases considerably.

What really means 2 nm engraving

The M6 chip is manufactured using a 2 nm process that allows more transistors to be combined into a given surface. This density can improve performance and energy efficiency.

However, the name "2 nm" does not correspond to the exact size of each transistor. This is the business name of a manufacturing generation, whose precise characteristics depend on the foundry.

The M6 has a central processor with 12 cores: two super cores, four performance cores and six efficient cores. Its graphics processor also has 12 cores, compared to 10 in the Mac Mini M4.

Apple adds two 16-core neuron motors and neuronal accelerators to each graphic heart. The unified memory bandwidth reaches 170 GB/s.

A computer more oriented to local AI

M6 accelerators can distribute an artificial intelligence calculation between the central processor, the graphic processor and the neuronal motors.

This approach allows local execution of certain image generation models, programming assistants and language models. The data can then remain on the computer, while the operation does not depend entirely on a cloud service.

However, it should not be assumed that all Apple Intelligence functions work offline. Some may still require Internet, external service, compatible language or server processing.

Apple announces up to four times the maximum performance of the Mac mini M4 in certain loads of the AI, up to twice the graphic performance and up to 40% better for the central processor.

These values are based on a selection of tests performed by Apple. They do not describe each software or model of the AI.

M6 or M5 Pro: two quite different machines

The Mac Mini M6 includes 16 GB of unified memory in its basic configuration. It can be configured with 24 or 32 GB, while its storage ranges from 256 GB to 2 TB.

The M5 Pro version targets more demanding work. It starts with a 15-core central processor, a 16-core graphics processor, 24 GB of memory, and a 512 GB SSD. The options reach 18 cores, 20 graphics cores, 64 GB of memory and 8 TB of storage.

Unified memory and internal storage must be selected at the time of ordering. They are not designed to be easily replaced by the user after purchase.

For everyday use, programming and light creation, the M6 should be the most logical choice. The M5 Pro is more suitable for intensive video editing, 3D rendering, game development and local models that require more memory.

Same housing, faster connections

The housing measures about 12.7 cm. Two USB-C ports and a helmet socket are on the front.

The M6 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports at the rear, while the M5 Pro moves to Thunderbolt 5. Both include HDMI, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet. An Ethernet interface with 10 Gbit/s remains optional.

Depending on the configuration of the screens, the Mac mini can support up to three. The M6 accepts two 6K screens at 60 Hz accompanied by a third 5K screen at 60 Hz.

Prices and availability in Canada

Canadian pre-orders have been open since August 25. Delivery and availability at retailers are scheduled to begin September 22.

The Mac Mini M6 with 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage costs $1,249 CAD. The M5 Pro start-up configuration, with 24 GB of memory and 512 GB of storage, costs CA$ 2,399.

The range of the two main starting versions is therefore $1,249 to $2,399, before taxes and accessories.

The M6 model replaces a Mac mini M4 recently displayed at C$799. The increase is $450 for the lowest cost configuration, although the new model adds two cores, two graphics cores and Ethernet at 2.5 Gbit/s.

The final price can vary depending on memory, storage, network interface, accessories, AppleCare+, retailer, promotion and region.

Limits or Considerations

The 256 GB SSD of the configuration at C$1,249 could quickly be filled with local videos, games, or d

The 32 GB memory limit of the M6 can also restrict the most voluminous language models. The M5 Pro offers more memory, but its starting price is approaching that of some workstations.

The keyboard, mouse and screen must also be included in the cost of a new post.

Finally, no independent measurements confirm the speed, consumption, temperature, fan noise or sustained performance of the M6. Buyers who are not in a hurry would benefit from waiting for the first test benches.

Conclusion

The Mac Mini M6 brings the 2 nm engraving into a mainstream desktop computer and considerably strengthens the local processing of artificial intelligence.

Its compact housing, modern connectivity and new accelerators could make it an interesting machine for work, creation and development.

The counterpart is financial: at CA$1,249 with only 256 GB of storage, the Mac mini is no longer the affordable Apple computer than it was at the launch of the M4 model. The value of M6 will now depend on independent results that can justify this increase.
