Phonak EON: a hearing aid that separates speech from noise through AI

Phonak EON relies on AI in real time to better isolate speech in noise. Autonomy, connectivity, availability in Canada and real limits.

Phonak EON: a hearing aid that separates speech from noise through AI

Understanding a conversation in a restaurant can remain difficult even with hearing aid. The problem is not only to amplify the sounds: it is necessary to distinguish useful voices from noise coming from several directions.

Phonak is trying to improve this separation with EON, a new hearing aid platform launched on August 24, 2026. Its most advanced model, Audeo EON Sphere, uses a specialized processor to analyze speech and noise in real time.

The technology does not restore a normal hearing and its results vary by person. Its main performance also remains to be confirmed by independent tests.

A platform offered in three versions

The range includes three rechargeable devices placed behind the ear.

Audeo EON Sphere is intended for mild to deep hearing loss and has the HYPERSONIC IA processor. Audeo EON R maintains automatic adaptation and connectivity, but without the advanced voice separation system of the Sphere model.

CROS EON R is intended for people whose ears have hearing loss that cannot be removed. It transmits the sounds captured on this side to an Audeo EON R aid worn on the other ear.

Sonova presents the three models and their uses.

EON requires new equipment. Owners of appliances Thus, Infinio's previous functions cannot be obtained by simply updating software.

Two different-roled AI systems

Audeo EON Sphere uses Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 to separate speech from noise with a neural network. The treatment seeks to preserve an interesting voice even when it does not come directly from the front.

A second system, AutoSense OS AI 8.0, continuously analyses the sound environment. It automatically selects and combines amplification, directional microphones, noise reduction and programmes corresponding to the situation.

Phonak claims that the device analyzes its environment up to 700 times per second. The company also claims that users become twice as likely to understand each word when Spheric Speech Clarity is activated, compared to the same setting without that function.

These figures come from evaluations commissioned or carried out by Phonak. They do not mean that each user will understand every conversation twice as well. The type of hearing loss, adjustment, language, distance, number of people and ambient noise can change the result.

Phonak's technical presentation details the announced operation.

A smaller and less energetic device

The previous Sphere model already showed good performance in noise, but its second processor required a relatively large and energy-intensive casing.

Phonak claims that its new processor consumes 37% less energy during Spheric Speech Clarity processing. EON Sphere would thus be 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous generation.

The manufacturer announces up to 38 hours of charging autonomy. In a more demanding scenario presented to the media — including eight hours of audio broadcasting and time spent in the noise — the estimate fell to about 22 hours.

The actual range will depend in particular on the degree of amplification, the use of AI, Bluetooth diffusion, the environment, the age of the battery and the settings made by the audioprosthetist.

Bluetooth, Auracast and Wind Noise

EON can connect to many Bluetooth-enabled phones, computers and TVs to transmit calls and audio content.

The range also supports Auracast. This standard allows a public place to broadcast directly an advertisement, conference or soundtrack to compatible headphones and hearing aids.

However, this function requires that an Auracast diffuser be installed in the visited location. It therefore does not automatically make all cinemas, airports or conference rooms compatible.

Phonak also adds WindBlock 2.0, which must reduce the turbulence captured by microphones outside. The maximum values advanced for this function still come from the manufacturer's tests.

Prices and availability in Canada

EON can be ordered by hearing professionals in the United States since 24 August. Sonova announced a deployment in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Australia and other markets in September.

Canada is not included in the contracts and no Canadian date has been announced. It will also be necessary to confirm the registration of specific models before they are presented as marketed in the country.

Phonak has published neither Canadian prices nor official ranges for technology levels 50, 70 and 90. The cost may vary depending on model, level of function, clinic, fit, follow-up, accessories, insurance coverage, province and region.

Limits or Considerations

No complete independent test of the new EON Sphere is yet published. It is therefore not possible to confirm its real autonomy or its advantage over competing models.

A hearing aid must also be chosen and adjusted according to a professional assessment. A better chip does not correct a poor positioning, an inadequate tip or settings that do not match hearing loss.

Finally, the AI used here analyses the sound; She doesn't understand a conversation like a person. It can promote the acoustic characteristics of speech, but it can still be mistaken when several voices, music and sudden noise overlap.

Conclusion

Phonak EON shows a practical use of artificial intelligence: treating sound quickly enough to make some conversations less difficult.

His main advance could be as physical as algorithmic. The new processor allows Phonak to keep its neural treatment in a smaller and more autonomous announced device.

The potential is important for people with noise difficulties. However, independent testing, pricing and a Canadian calendar will be required before the next generation is fully evaluated.
